Most Asinine Comment Of The Moment

WiFi is alive and well in the classrooms, based on my personal observations of the students next to and in front of me. Try it in third floor and second floor of the old W building. You may be right about fewer lsats below 155, however I know several who admit to lsats under 150. Your profs may stick to the subject, but some of mine do not and have not. Self-study is not what I expect for my money. Insufficient hot chicks is not the point, as it only takes one or two for the gonad-driven goons to dominate the class discussion and screw it up for everyone. I wonder if grads from those fourth tier schools get jobs...

But "insufficient hot chicks" is a HUGE and most relevant point, to say otherwise wholly discredits whatever tangential point Anonymous was trying to make.

Does This Mean Brian Can Now Move Back To Virginia?

The American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia applauded a state Supreme Court ruling today that strikes down a law banning sexual relations between unmarried persons.

"Common sense and the Constitution [And don't forget horniness. - ed.] joined forces to give us this very right decision," said Kent Willis, Executive Director of the ACLU of Virginia.

Gameday Picks

Mr. Poon - 14
Mrs. Poon - 24

Something about defense and a strong running game winning playoff games, so the conventional wisdom says.

Rams - 24
Falcons - 27
This is how the Falcons are going to win this game and the only way they're going to win this game; Vick runs for two TDs, Vick throws a TD pass, Vick catches his own TD pass, and Vick kicks two FGs.

Bonus Pick
Seeing how I'm pretty shitty at this jinx every team I pick.

Arizona - 92
UCLA - 79

My Law School Grades

Good news first:
  • I passed all of my classes.
  • I won't have to repeat any of the classes.
  • I won't have to retake units.
  • My cumulative GPA is still above a 2.0.
  • I didn't do as bad as I thought I would.
Bad news:
  • I scored below a 2.0 for the semester.
  • I'm on Academic Probation.
  • I might have to drop my positions as an SBA commissioner and an APALSA board member.
More about my grades to come later.

What Else I Learned From Legal Profession

A California statute prohibits sexual relations between a lawyer and a client under some circumstances. Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code Section 6106.9.

Hopefully those circumstances are limited to when the client isn't hot or is male.

yaz: I got a * in conlaw
Bruin7089: Damn
Bruin7089: Well seeing how I usually score below you...
yaz: You didn't fail any classes right?
Bruin7089: I don't know.
Bruin7089: I'm thinking I can go the whole year without checking my grades.
Bruin7089: They'll just tell me if I fail out right?
yaz: You haven't checked?
Bruin7089: Nope.
yaz: They are all in now
Bruin7089: I know.
Bruin7089: I don't think I want to know.
yaz: I didn't either
Bruin7089: So what's the point of knowing what my grades are?
yaz: So you know where you stand
Bruin7089: Wouldn't it just depress me to the point where I might just want to stop studying?
yaz: No
yaz: You would hope not
Bruin7089: I would think so.

yaz: It might motivate you to study more
Bruin7089: I'll put off looking at my grades.
Bruin7089: Don't want it to ruin my five day weekend.
yaz: okay
Bruin7089: That I'll spend studying.
yaz: true

So, should I even bother checking my grades?

UPDATE (8:47): I'm leaning to not looking until all my grades for the entire school year are in.

Grades

They're all in for the core classes of section T1. I'll be posting mine up shortly, after I work up the courage to check them out. Anyone got a bottle of Jack they'd like to give me?

SW And Passing The Bar

Frequent commenter, Anonymous, left the following comment:
Makes one wonder why the bar pass rate is dropping at SW. Several theories: students with laptops playing internet games on WiFi during class; too many entering students with LSAT scores below 155; professors ramble on and on about useless trivia instead of homing in on what one must know to pass the bar; class discussions that are directed more toward impressing the hot chick next to you rather than to improving legal understanding; etc. What a school. Is there a fourth tier it can slip into?

First, have you tried logging onto the wireless internet in one of the classrooms? Not happening. Though there are many spider solitaire experts. Second, the incoming LSAT score has increased since 2001. So unless there are much higher LSAT scores masking a larger number of scores below 155 since 2001, it's an unlikely reason. Third, for the most part I think the professors teach the subject matter. Though I can't tell you if the professors have gotten better or worse since 2001. Fourth, have you seen the girls at SW? Not enough hot chicks to impress for 43% of the class to fail the bar. Finally, there is a fourth tier for SWLAW to slip into, which may not be such a bad thing since one of those fourth tiered schools had a better pass rate.

On This Day, One Year Ago

What was I worried about? I ended up passing all of my classes and was ranked somewhere in the 30-40 percentile range.

It Just Can't Be

Today was my second day of classes of spring semester. It was mentioned today that I look tired.

Light Posting From Me Until This Evening

In class until about 6pm. I suggest you head on over to Clearly Erroneous and leave them plenty of anonymous hate comments. Outside of the law students and the PD as contributors, the following is about as law related as the posts over there get,
Why is that women can blame men for having a small penis, but men can't blame women for being too loose? Surely there's some sort of Equal Protection violation going on here.

What I Learned From Legal Profession

Under the 1983 ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct, once a lawyer, I "should aspire" to do at least 50 hours of pro bono service per year.

That's 50 nonbillable hours. I guess I'll be falling short of my professional aspirations.

SWLAW'S Bar Exam Results

The Dean released the numbers for first time takers of the July 2004 Bar exam. SWLAW had a pass rate of 57% among the first time takers which still placed it 14th, and still behind Chapman, among the 19 ABA approved California law schools. In comparison, Loyola was in the 60s and Pepperdine, which recently was given second tier staus, had a pass rate in the 70s. Other numbers to the best of my recall:

  • 19 out of 20 law review people passed - hate to be the one person who didn't.
  • Moot Court had a pass rate of 86%.
  • The Int'l Trade Journal people had a pass rate in the 60s.
  • ITAP was somewhere in the mid to high 50s.
  • The pass rate for those graduating in the top quartile was in the low 90s.
  • The pass rate for those graduating in the second quartile was in the low 70s.
  • The pass rate for those graduating in the bottom quartile was 11%.
  • Evening students passed at a 46% clip.
  • SCALE students - an accelerated 2 year program - had a 73% pass rate.
  • The Day program was in the mid to upper 50s.

In 2001 the rate of first time takers on the Bar Exam from SWLAW was 72%, the next year it was 71%, in 2003 it dropped to 58%, and this year it is 57%. While I sincerely hope that I am wrong, I don't have much faith in this year's 3Ls to reverse the trend. I do have greater faith in my graduating class, but that's probably due to a heavily biased opinion.

Monday's Schedule

Didn't really blog much yesterday because of the schedule.

Business Association: 9-11
Con Law: 2-3
Forensic Evidence: 6-8

Three hour breaks between the classes that were used to have lunch, catch up with friends, do some reading and have a SBA meeting. Afterwards, a few of us went to dinner in Larchmont Village at Chan Dara. Slightly pricey but the portions were good and the waitresses waitresses were decent looking.

So that's why yesterday was a one post day.
