Something To Look Forward To

A company that develops bar exam study tools, BeatTheBar.com, is looking for the most unsuccessful bar exam entrant in the United States as measured by the number of times he or she failed the exam.

"We want the story," says Darren Shuster, the publicist running the contest. "The person who didn't give up for 30 years should get the prize, rather than the one who took it nine times in the same year."

In California, at least, no one's quite that big a loser -- you can only take the exam twice a year.

But chances are, the winning loser will be from the Golden State. BeatTheBar.com founder Michael Lowthorp says California and New York have the lowest pass rates, especially for repeat takers.

"In California, if you get a 145 or better on the multistate, you have less than a 10 percent chance of passing," Lowthorp says.

All I have to do is pass law school first.

Hopefully SWLAW Got A Good Price

Seriously though, if SWLAW were serious about increasing the bar passage rate wouldn't they offer some sort of bar review course of their own?

Good News for.... errr... Every One!

It has been reported in People magazine that Carrie Underwood is now single. After coming to Hollywood she has broken up with her boyfriend from backwardsville. Good luck to all!

Grades

Word keeps coming in that my study buddies have not done so well with the reported grades so far. I'll be the first to admit, I wasn't the brightest person in that group and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't the least bit worried about staying in school.

But on the bright side I'd get a full refund on my summer school books and save myself an extra $30,000+ in debt. Yeah... still would suck.

It's Heavy Too

Went to school today to pick up the reading material for Debtor-Creditor Relations. The supplemental material is over 200 pages and the other reading material entitled, Commercial and Debtor-Creditor Law: Selected Statutes, is 2247 pages long. Now I don't know you would believe the same, but if something is 2247 pages in length, I believe the word "selected" should not be anywhere near the cover of the book much less so in the title. But that could just be me.

How Late Is Late?*

Researchers have finally decided how late is late - 10 minutes, 17 seconds.

That is the lateness threshold at which people feel it necessary to telephone and admit they are going to be late.

However, about 10% of us would not consider calling until at least 30 minutes beyond the "agreed appointment time", says the study, by motorists' website GetMeThere.co.uk.

[A]lmost 70% of young women believe it is "acceptable, if not fashionable" to be late on a first date because it makes them feel "less desperate".

*Alternative title: "Late is Macy attending Business Associations" which usually exceeded the 10 minutes and 17 seconds. Though maybe she just wanted to seem less desperate to learn Business Associations than the rest of us.

Any Suggestions?

It's the summer after 2L and naturally I'm thinking of taking the August MPRE. Now I've heard of people taking it cold and passing it and of others who had to take it multiple times for the same result. So how should I study for this thing or should I even bother? Was taking Legal Professions enough? Would reading the Model Rules be enough? Should I sign up for a course on the MPRE? Anyone?

UPDATE: Has anyone taken this free online course for the MPRE? If so, how is it?

Also, I hear studying off of these is enough. Anyone else try that approach?

Just Saw The Commercial For The Fantastic Four

So let me get something straight. Jessica Alba, this Jessica Alba, is playing a character in the movie whose superpower is turning herself invisible? Does that sound right to anyone? Is there really any possible way to use that power for the good of man? Wouldn't the real superpower be making herself visibly hot looking? I'm just asking.

For Those Who Cant' Get Enough Of Evidence

I've Got A Song Stuck In My Head

It's a must see and hear for those who have taken Evidence and perhaps a useful study aid for those who have yet to take the Evidence final. Trust me.

And I Thought Hitting .400 Was Only Acceptable In Baseball*

Of the 4,520 applicants for the Feb. 22-24 exam, 40 percent -- 1,810 -- passed. That tied the pass rate for the February 2000 test and was 4.7 percentage points higher than last year.

The pass rate for those who attended California law schools approved by the American Bar Association was 57.7 percent; from ABA schools outside the state, 58 percent; from schools accredited by the State Bar's Committee of Bar Examiners but not the ABA, 25.9 percent; for those who went to unaccredited law schools, 3.7 percent; and for students from correspondence schools, 42.1 percent.

So let me get something wrong, right. Schools outside of California better prepared their students to pass the California bar exam than schools inside California? Must be those kids from Whittier.

*I'm quite aware that hitting .400 in baseball is more than merely "acceptable." After all, I'm not prof. Kush.

I wonder who Brian is voting for as the next American Idol.

It Would Have Exposed The League Conspiracy

I guess it was too farfetched for even the NBA to have the Lakers win the lottery. Not that it would have helped the Lakers any next year. I hate Kobe.

I Must Have The Wrong Definitions In Mind

Grades are important to many law firms making hiring decisions. However, the weight that they carry in these decisions most often depends on the particular firm involved and whether you are (A) a junior attorney or law student, (B) a mid level to senior associate or (C) a partner. At each stage of your career, the importance of your law school grades will diminish and your work experience will take precedence in hiring decisions.

However, it is also worth noting that many prestigious firms are often willing to look at individuals who are stellar performers from schools that are not in the Top 10 or even the Top 25. The most prestigious firms are looking for excellence, and excellence in their minds begins the second you receive your first grades in law school, whether it is a first, second or third tier law school. Either you have it or you do not.

What third or even second tier school cracks the top 25?

Paramilitary Support Is Probably A More Effective Means Than A Subpoena

I wonder if they would hire SWLAW grads. We do have more than our fair share of shady people at our school. Just take any one of those who study in group study rooms 11 and 12 for example - shady... or hot, depending on who's inside (it's especially hot if the room's occupants includes multitudes of women only - but only hot women).

Sushi Etiquette

So Brian was following the second rule. Of course he failed to mention this to his uncouth dinner companions until I asked him why he was doing so. Apparently he didn't want to spread any of his diseases around but didn't mind acquiring anyone else's. What a gentleman.
