Southwestern utilizes an alpha grading system in which the actual grade earned is represented by an alphabetical letter. Grades are assigned from A+ to F. No unit credit is granted when the grade received is an F. A cumulative GPA of 2.0 must be maintained....
To insure equity in multiple section courses and uniformity of grades, the faculty has adopted a policy requiring that all required courses must have a mean of 2.2 to 2.4 and a median of C+. All electives must have a mean of 2.2 to 2.6 and a median of C+/B-. In courses where fewer than 30 students are enrolled, this policy is to be used as a guideline.

Last Post Of The Day
LawSclBarbie has a post on median grades for several law schools. I thought I'd add SW's info. From SWLAW's student handbook:

Final Cambridge '04 Grade In
Here.
Or you could join me as I reminisce about something other than my GPA. Looking back on it, I can't believe that I completely misspelled Sean Paul's last name.

So funny because it's so true.
(link taken from here, which was taken from here, which was taken from here - and I just wasted three minutes of my life, that would be 0.05 in billable hours)
I AM 26% WHITE TRASH! ![]() The white trash in my blood will not keep me from becoming a doctor or a lawyer, but it will keep me from a good haircut and any sort of fashion sense. |
Last Time You Have To Think About What's Ethical
Enjoy it and good luck to those taking the MPRE today.
Last Post Of The Day
A SBA meeting and an APALSA meeting ended the day. The SBA one ran long but the calendar finally got completed. I took on a couple of added responsibilities for us Student Welfare Commissioners, which I'm sure will please Brandy when she gets back. Now all we need is a mission statement. The APALSA meeting over dinner went really well considering the circumstances. However, someone shorted on the bill and I had to pick up a few extra dollars but whatever it was a good night.

Maybe I Should Transfer Out Of SW
And into a Wisconsin law school.
Graduates from Wisconsin's two law schools have a privilege that is unique in the nation: They don't have to take the bar exam to become a lawyer.
The "diploma privilege," a 134-year-old policy, exempts most law school graduates from the University of Wisconsin and Marquette University from taking the bar exam.
Nearly two-thirds of the state's more than 21,000 licensed attorneys have never taken the state bar exam, including six of the seven state Supreme Court justices, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager.
Last Post Of The Day
I was told that Prof. Epstein mentioned my blog in his International Media Law class in Cambridge. It's enough to make me wonder if other faculty members and administrators at SW are going to soon know about this blog. Maybe I should start editing some old posts.

WooooHooo!
We're #54! We're #54! Pay no attention to who's on top. It's an obvious east coast bias. Come on cover jinx, time to work your magic.
Big Brother Is Watching Me
A lot of dot govs have visited this site in the last 100 hits. The USDOJ, the FCC, HUD, The Library of Congress and the NCLIS. Don't discount that last one, after all, it's a national commission that "reports directly to the White House and the Congress on the implementation of national policy". So President Bush is probably being briefed about my blog as you read this.
A Sudden Realization
Manual trackbacking is a bitch but it brings great joy to wusses. Go fig.
UPDATE: It's such a bitch that I just messed it up.

Stat Of The Day
Haven't even had a chance to make coffee and the number of first time visitors to this shithole of a site is already ten times greater than it usually is. That's the power of JD2B I suppose, turning shithole sites into frequently viewed shithole sites.
Maybe I should make like Natalaw now that I have an audience or at least threaten to do so then I can receive some love and attention like a certain someone has - not mentioning names but... definitely linking, but hey... at least the guy ain't a wuss. And seriously now, don't get too attached to this shithole, I don't want to create heartache.

I'm Not Thin, I'm... Small-Intestined???
A Dutch group wants to ban the word 'thin' from the dictionary because it's insulting to underweight people.Heh... "fat over-rulers"... that itself is not a put down on the fatties.
The group, called Small Intestines Anonymous, represents people who struggle to put on weight.
They say the word 'thin' is a term of abuse used by 'fat over-rulers' to put down slender people.

First Grade From Cambridge '04 In
International Entertainment Law grade came in. Same options as before:
Go here for my grade.
Or go here to revisit the wooden stick figure porn.
UPDATE: My friend is angry at the grade he got and he did better than I did. I, on the other hand, have become desensitized to grades, thanks to my school's grading policy, and therefore don't mind the grade I received. That's probably not a good thing, settling into my mediocrity that is.

Law School Memory #34: Shooting The Breeze
A couple of times during the second semester of law school the group of us would hang outside of BW right after our last class of the day - Crim Pro probably - just talking about whatever, wasting two to three hours as people shuffled in and out of the library surely wondering about the slackers. But it was times like those that kept my sanity.
In Complete Agreement
Sounds like this guy got burned but doesn't regret it.
Right when I got to Stanford, a 3L told me - "Elliot, it is a small class here - only 500 or so people in the whole school. Don't make a mistake and date a classmate - when it doesn't work out, you'll have to see her every day." Well, I ignored that advice which was repeated to me by many others - and fell completely in love with a girl in my same year almost from the very beginning of law school.I'm of the opinion that law school presents me with one of my last - if not the last - great opportuniites at finding love and that love trumps all. From that perspective, there's not much I wouldn't risk for love, certainly more than whatever embarrassments or awkwardness that would result from a failed law school romance.
Two years, and one broken engagement later, I am left pondering this advice....
For those of you entering or in law school, some of your classmates will be outrageously anal, dumb, and predictable. But others, no matter where you go to school, could be among the most talented people you meet in your life. Isn't it the height of risk averse stupidity to foresware dating those students merely because you are afraid things won't work out? Shouldn't you at least take a stab, if the opportunity arises, at trying to make something special work? For in the end, what is worse - dealing with a classmate you hooked up with, or not hooking up, not dating that special somebody, and stuck wondering on a late night at the firm "what if..."
(link via JD2B who has finally linked to me - and I didn't even have to say, "pretty pretty please with a cherry on top")
Foreskin
It came up it in discussion once again after lunch with Bunny, Annie, Rose, Sean and Brian. An interesting question resulted, who among circumsized men have seen "a live foreskin"?
Screw The Presidential Elections
We all know President Bush is going to be re-elected - no way his brother is going to allow him to lose Florida. A more up-in-the-air election and thus important vote is going on here. Media coverage of the candidates here.
I'm throwing my support to the Keebler Elves because they're short and therfore can sympathize.

It's Refreshing
To see this sort of attitude from an incoming 1L. Hopefully I get to see a lot of that positive attitude at Orientation and hopefully it isn't dampened by certain elements at Southwestern.
I'm A Nerd
I had a rough night's sleep. Got to bed at about 12:30 and awoke about an hour later and ended up alternating between short naps and laying awake in bed thinking. With books now in hand, a SBA meeting under my belt, concerns about APALSA, and my first visit to campus in a while; could it be that I didn't sleep well because I'm excited about the start of school?
Stat Of The Day
This blog has gone international... at least in its readership. In the last 100 hits to this site it has had visitors from: the United Kingdom, the Republic of Korea - the good side not the evil one, Belgium, Sweden, Singapore - country of canings, Canada - does this really count, Mexico, and the Islamic Republic of Iran - there's only one of those and it's evil.

I Need An Answer
What's with this morbid fascination among rising 2Ls about who won't be rising? A lot of the current gossip at my school is about who didn't make it to 2L status. I also refuse to believe my school is unique in this regard.
512
The amount I spent on books today and I still have to purchase a casebook, a rules supp., print shop materials, and study aides.

My 1st SBA Meeting
I was installed/appointed as a Commissioner of Student Welfare. Basically, all I have to do is make sure that every 1L has a mentor.
Now how to describe the meeting? Well... to put the best spin on it, it was very... flexible which allowed everyone to... contribute. Another way to put it is that it was organized chaos.
As of now the incoming SBA is still trying to get a handle on things as it feels its way around. The good news is that everyone involved has good intentions and is not there just to put something on their resumes. The thing is, not everyone is on the same page, which can be a good thing in that there's a lot of ideas being floated around and different views on those ideas are discussed. Of course, that could lead to wasted effort if those efforts are not properly focused. Hopefully that focus comes as the SBA gets more settled.

My Own Quiz
Would you and I be a good match?
You'll probably have to register to take the quiz. I'm making no gurantees that it's going to be worth the trouble. Some of it won't be understandable if you haven't been a regular reader of this blog and if you are, some of it still won't make sense unless you're one of the unfortunate few.
By the way, keep the questions coming, by answering only 4 questions I've become the 5th most prolific as far as answering direct questions from here.

Dating Asians may not be my first preference but that probably doesn't qualify me for the Colorado skinhead registry.

What Did I Get Myself Into Now?
The Student Welfare Commission organizes and promotes activities and programs designed to enhance student life. The Commission distributes information on medical insurance and the HelpNet student counseling services. The Student Welfare Commission of the Southwestern Student Bar Association (SBA) also sponsors general support programs such as an "Adjusting to Law School" workshop and a Student Mentor Program which matches first-year students with continuing student mentors who can provide insight into the law school experience. The students get together at SBA-sponsored events and on an individual basis throughout the year.
