The bacchanals I found so distressing were supposed to be fun because they were expensive - spending a lot of money to forget about their jobs is just what lawyers do - it's a kind of reflex, not anyone's fault, instinctual. By the time they become partners, these same people seem extraordinarily greedy to most people - but it's really not as much greed as habit, like the way I might have absently reached for a doughnut while busy with school in days before.
